Director, Internet Technology

Biography

I serve the Internet Society as the Director, Internet Technology, focusing on helping explain the changes happening to the Internet and how we use it. I am one of the project leaders for our 2023 Sustainable Technical Communities project. Previously, I led our 2022 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite project and our 2020 Open Standards Everywhere (OSE) project. I am also active within the DNS and real-time communications areas of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

Since the mid-1980s I have been working with online communication technologies and helping businesses and organizations understand how to use and participate in these new media. An author of multiple books on networking, security, IPv6, and Linux, I frequently present at industry conferences and events. I have been blogging and writing online for over 20 years and podcasting for over 15 years.

I am a strong advocate for the open Internet focused on helping people understand the changes going on all around us within communication technology and practices.

I speak English, German, and a bit of French. Outside of work, I am often writing online, editing Wikipedia, or live streaming. When not in front of the keyboard, I can usually be found running, hiking, or kayaking in Vermont—or participating in the sport of curling, something I picked up from living in Canada for five years.
